Description
The California Sheephead is a large, distinctive wrasse known for its prominent red body and black head and tail in males, with females and juveniles displaying more uniform reddish-pink coloration. This protogynous hermaphrodite is a significant predator in its native kelp forest and rocky reef habitats, primarily feeding on hard-shelled invertebrates. Due to its immense size and specific temperate water requirements, it is best suited for public aquariums or extremely large, specialized home aquariums.
