Brown Mudfish

Description

The Brown Mudfish (*Neochanna apoda*) is a unique freshwater fish endemic to New Zealand, known for its remarkable ability to survive periods of drought by aestivating in mud. It possesses an elongated, cylindrical body with small fins and a mottled brown coloration, providing excellent camouflage in its preferred muddy, vegetated habitats. These nocturnal carnivores primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish, thriving in slow-moving or stagnant waters.
